Our Work

HUṠWEJ’s mission is rooted in honoring and revitalizing Nisenan Culture, fostering stewardship of their Ancestral Homelands, and advocating for the visibility and sovereignty of the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe.

Through interconnected program areas, HUṠWEJ works to reconnect Land and People, preserve and celebrate Cultural expressions, and illuminate the historical and contemporary truths of the Tribe.

  • An intergenerational groups of Nisenan Tribal members, including children and Elders, standing outdoors in a wooded area, looking up with some raising their hands, under a sky with trees around them at the recently rematriated Yulića

    LAND + PEOPLE

Recognizes the symbiotic relationship between the vitality of Nisenan Homelands and the well-being of its People, and thus prioritizes health and healing for both.

    CULTURE + ART

Supports the ongoing revitalization of Nisenan Cultural practices, ensuring that traditions, language, and creative expressions continue to thrive for future generations.

  • A group of Nisenan Tribal Members ceremonially opening the Nisenan Reclamation Corridor during the opening of the Tribute Trail Suspension Bridge in Nevada City, California.

    TRUTH + VISIBILITY

Amplifies the voices of the Nisenan people by sharing untold histories, addressing erasure, and advocating for their rightful recognition and representation.
